Location: Malvern, Pennsylvania

This project was the result of a terrific collaboration between Amuneal, the architects and the end clients. The goal was to create a series of dramatic architectural elements to define and ground the space.

Influenced by the exposed steel structure in the home, this feature stair and bridge was constructed from a combination of fabricated and standard structural steel members. However, to both lighten and elevate the design, 1-3/8” thick custom cast glass panels with integrated LED lights were used for each tread, landing and bridge panel. The integration of the LED lighting added considerable complexity, as the stringers were engineered and fabricated as accessible wire chases for each individual LED run. After fabrication, our in-house team hand-applied a blackened and burnished patina to all of the steel members and handrails. This finish added an artisan sensibility and helped to set the stair off from the heavier structural steel around it.

Ted Baker

Client: Mackenzie Keck

Design: TTMG International & Ted Baker

Location: New York, New York

Inspired by Amuneal's proprietary process of layering brass (and other metals) onto fabricated steel elements, the international design team incorporated this technique into their final design. The result was a design that incorporated elements influenced by the space, the heritage, and the sense of humor of the brand. Fabricated from laser-cut steel and machined brass components, the three-story tall staircase was fabricated and finished with a blackened and rusted patina. Once completed, we created over-sized stencils to prepare, apply and finish the molten brass that was then applied to the surface of the steel, creating an intricate filigree pattern.

REI

Client: REI & Schimenti Construction

Design: Callison

Location: New York, New York

Over time we have come to understand that each project develops its own personality and culture. In keeping with the ethos of the REI brand, it should have been no surprise that this award-winning project would be characterized by a great collaboration between the Brand, the Architects, the GC and Amuneal. We are proud to have been part of REI's first NYC location and we feel fortunate to have been part of such a dedicated and dynamic team.

Amuneal engineered, fabricated and installed the custom steel, glass and bronze guardrail for the store's monumental feature staircase. The work required extensive field surveys that drove a series of fabrication and installation checks to insure the precision of each required detail.

Mackenzie Keck

Client: Mackenzie Keck

Design: Amuneal Manufacturing Corp

Location: New York, New York

As MacKenzie Keck, began work on their 60,000 sq. ft. world headquarters, they asked us to participate by designing, fabricating, and installing this feature stair element. To begin the dialogue with the client, we started with a series of hand renderings to develop a clear direction for the materials and structure of the stair. This important step allowed the client to inform the process and influence the final design.

Designed to anchor the space and be visually light and modern at the same time, we developed a cantilevered open riser stair. Fabricated from blackened steel and hand-finished aluminum bar grating, the stair was first built in place at Amuneal before its final installation. The refined industrial finishes and unexpected mechanical structure were the perfect compliment to this dynamic environment. To emphasize the lightness of the stair, we designed a support system that allowed us to bring the stair and the intermediate landing away from the walls. Using a series of side-mounted outriggers, we braced the landing from four points and allowed light to pass to the garden below. In addition to the fabrication of the stair, Amuneal also fabricated and installed a series of guardrails to protect and define a bridge feature that connects a kitchen, lounge, and conference rooms to the second floor office studios. The infill panels on the guardrails were constructed from a more open version of the bar grating to increase the materials transparency.

Geometric Stair

Client: Jurg Rebein & Leah Demchick

Design: Jurg Rebein & McKay Architecture & Design

Location: New York, New York

It is a difficult task to take a very complicated design and have it appear effortless. In this collaboration with our client, Amuneal engineered, fabricated, and installed this steel and glass geometric staircase in their New York City home. Looking at the original design drawings, it wasn’t immediately clear if we were looking at a staircase or a piece of sculpture. Either way we knew we wanted to build it. In a truly collaborative effort, our talented team of artists and designers engineered and fabricated this geometric spiral staircase from 3/8” thick steel. Because the stair needed to be dropped in through the roof of the unit, we broke the 4,000 lb. sculptural stair into four sections that we welded back together and finished on site. Utilizing a complete 3D model, our team fabricated the stair using interlocking laser cut components to maintain the exacting geometry. Seeing the stair being fabricated, it again blurred the line between function and sculpture. Seeing it suspended seven stories above Manhattan…it was definitely art.

These types of projects test our abilities and push us to be a better, more resourceful partner to our customers. We love these kinds of challenges.

Abercrombie & Fitch

Client: Abercrombie & Fitch

Design: Selldorf Architects

Location: New York, New York

For this high profile flagship concept store in New York City, Amuneal helped the owner and architect achieve a unique custom woven lattice material by developing a process to cost effectively produce it in-house. Essentially, we built a loom on which we could weave metal. The bars were fed into this custom-made loom fixture. We created custom laser-cut locators to ensure the accuracy of the pattern. The lattice was fabricated to create both infill panels for the monumental stairway and the walls of the elevator hoist-way and cab, creating the transparent effect of an old world cage elevator with a contemporary feel.
